Importance of Choosing a Dental Home

Our pediatric dental office, as well as the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), recommends establishing a dental home for your child by age one. Children who have a dental home are more likely to receive appropriate preventive and routine oral health care. It also allows them to become comfortable with visiting the dentist at a young age, making future visits stress free.

Words to Avoid

You can help make the first visit to the dentist enjoyable and positive. It is best if you refrain from using words around your child that might cause unnecessary fear, such as needle, shot, pull, drill, or hurt. Our trained staff uses words that convey the same message, but are educational and nonfrightening to the child.

Examination Recommendations

We invite you to stay with your child during the initial exam. For future appointments, we recommend that you allow your child to accompany our staff independently. We can usually establish a closer rapport with your child when you are not present. Our purpose is to gain your child's confidence and overcome apprehension. However, if you choose, you are welcome to accompany your child for treatment.
